MWAA begins search for design contractor for National’s terminal 1
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is seeking an architectural and engineering firm for the redevelopment of terminal 1 at Reagan National Airport (DCA), with a potential design contract worth up to $108 million over eight years. The Washington Business Journal reports an initial two-year contract valued at $35 million will focus on replacing the existing nine-gate concourse and upgrading a southern section of the airport. Slot restrictions at the airport limit its growth; earlier this year, Congress added five beyond-perimeter routes yet to be awarded.
A major expansion of terminal 1 is not expected. The project is part of a broader $9 billion capital construction program, with significant impacts expected for Southwest Airlines, terminal 1’s primary tenant.
