Microsoft’s AI ambitions
Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella is making significant strategic moves in AI beyond a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, reports the Wall Street Journal. The Redmond-based giant has invested heavily in AI partnerships and seeding startups, including a $1.5 billion in an Abu Dhabi-based firm.
These actions have positioned Microsoft as a dominant player in the emerging AI market, which has attracted the attention of regulators. Despite this, Nadella continues to push Microsoft's AI efforts, even establishing an internal competitor to OpenAI, “potentially putting it on a collision course with its most important partner. “ This effort is led by Mustafa Suleyman, “a longtime rival of OpenAI’s co-founder, Sam Altman.”
The article notes these efforts have allowed Microsoft to leapfrog Google in developing tools for real-world use, but the field is crowded and fast-moving, including Meta’s Llama and Anthropic, used by Notion and which recently received a $4 billion Amazon investement.
