House clears bipartisan spending patch, pushing funding battles to December
The House passed a continuing resolution on Wednesday to avert a government shutdown, extending current funding levels through 20 December, after the election. The measure, which provides $231 million for the Secret Service and supports FEMA’s disaster relief fund, passed 341-82 with significant Democratic support. Speaker Mike Johnson relied on bipartisan votes, as more Democrats than Republicans backed the bill.
The Senate is expected to pass the CR, allowing President Biden to sign it into law. The stopgap measure provides federal agencies with static budgets, but significant negotiations lie ahead to finalize government funding for fiscal 2025, with new battles anticipated over defense and domestic spending levels.
