DOD using AI to modernize legacy IT, faces policy hurdles
DefenseScoop reports on DOD’s leveraging AI to modernize outdated IT systems, including decades-old applications that run on mainframes, according to John Hale, chief of cloud services at the Defense Information Systems Agency. Hale noted that AI helps update legacy code, bringing applications closer to cloud compatibility. However, outdated acquisition policies pose significant challenges, as current procurement processes require planning and budgeting years in advance creating challenges to integrate the rapid pace of technological change. Hale emphasized the need for more flexible procurement laws to meet evolving IT needs and reduce reliance on shadow IT—unsanctioned applications—which can increase vulnerabilities.
