Defense One: Air Force merging ICBM program management
Defense One reports the U.S. Air Force is consolidating its Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program management, merging the Minuteman III and Sentinel directorates into a single entity. This restructuring follows the cancellation of a $12 billion Integration Support Contract 2.0, which faced protests and failed to meet program requirements.
ICBMs have been referred to as the nuclear sponge, the part of the triad that draws incoming Armageddon away from the coastal population centers to silos located across America’s heartland. Some question their utility in the face of multibillion-dollar upgrades.
Brig. Gen. William Rogers will lead the new Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Systems Directorate, aiming to streamline processes and improve coordination within the nuclear enterprise. As the Air Force develops a new contract to replace ISC 2.0, BAE Systems continues work under the current ISC 1.0 contract. The timeline for the new contract remains undisclosed.
